Understanding Thyroid Health
The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, and many other bodily functions. Thyroid disorders are common, affecting millions of people. Understanding thyroid function helps recognize and address thyroid problems.
Thyroid Function
The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland in the neck produces thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones regulate metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, and energy levels. The pituitary gland controls thyroid hormone production through TSH.
Common Thyroid Disorders
Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces insufficient hormones, causing fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance. Hyperthyroidism results from excess hormone production, causing weight loss, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat. Goiters are enlargements of the thyroid. Nodules are growths that may be benign or cancerous.
